What is the difference between ISO 20653 and IEC 60529?

ISO 20653 and IEC 60529 are both standards that relate to the degree of protection provided by enclosures for electrical equipment.  However, there are some differences between the two standards.

ISO 20653 is a newer standard that was published in 2013 and is also known as the “Road vehicles - Degrees of protection (IP code) - Protection of electrical equipment against foreign objects, water and access”.  It specifically applies to the protection of electrical equipment in road vehicles against foreign objects, water, and access.  The standard defines a set of codes that indicate the degree of protection provided by an enclosure, which is referred to as the IP code.

IEC 60529, on the other hand, is an older standard that was first published in 1989 and is also known as the “Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP code)”.  It applies to all types of electrical equipment and defines a set of codes that indicate the degree of protection provided by an enclosure against foreign objects, water, and access.

In terms of differences, ISO 20653 includes additional tests and requirements that are specific to road vehicles, such as testing for resistance to high-pressure water jets and dust ingress.  It also includes a higher number of IP codes to indicate more precise levels of protection.

The IP rating is a two-digit code that indicates how well an electronic device is protected against the ingress of solid objects (such as dust and sand) and liquids (such as water).  The first digit of the IP rating indicates the protection against solid objects, while the second digit indicates the protection against liquids.

ISO 20653 and IEC 60529 differ in their standards for testing and grading IP ratings.  ISO 20653 is a standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies the test methods and requirements for IP ratings.  It provides a set of test procedures for determining the degree of protection provided by an enclosure or a device against foreign objects, dust, and water.

On the other hand, IEC 60529 is a standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that defines the IP codes and the corresponding test methods.  This standard provides a range of different tests for determining the level of protection that an enclosure or device provides against the ingress of water and foreign objects.
